The kid was asleep on the landing of the staircase, who does this? He had heard us all downstairs, probably laughing a little too much at the audtitions, and decided he needed to investigate. So he got as close he could to the action without being noticed - and he fell asleep. And what is it about my boys and their woobies? Instead of covering up their bodies to keep warm they always strangle/suffocate themselves with it. It's why they always wake up with the craziest, sweaty, bedhead.

Cooper does the same thing with his blanket. I have to go in shortly after he falls asleep and take it off his head, although it always ends up back on it.
